There is an aura surrounding the historic hotels that seem to convey stories through time. From the worn-out carpeting to the rickety staircases and chipped window frames, it's easy to imagine travelers from the past laughing, loving, and living in the vast, sterile confines that double as a temporary home away from home. And while most hotel visits go without a hitch (and these days come without Airbnb's cleaning and extra horror stories fees), some hotels still offer overnight guests more than they bargained for when they check in.
